Falaj 11: Mirror Writing

  • First blood: still open

Not every disguise is an encoding standard. Two of the oldest tricks are reversing the text and rotating each letter a fixed number of places round the alphabet, the second known as rot13 when the shift is 13. Both are trivial to undo once you know they are there, and both are chained here.

The note in your home directory is unreadable at first glance. Decide what has been done to it, undo both steps and pipe the results together so the password appears at the end. rev reverses each line, and a rot13 helper applies the rotation, which is its own inverse. These two steps give the same result in either order, so if you still see nonsense, check that you undid both.

One combined command is a satisfying finish, but take the steps one at a time if you need to. This is a simulated shell over invented files: it understands a teaching subset of commands, and help lists them. When you have the password for level 12, run login 12 <password> or paste it into the answer box.
