Falaj 16: Who Answers?

Before you can talk to a machine you have to know it is there. ip addr shows the addresses of your own network interfaces, which tells you which network you are standing on, and ping sends a small message to another machine and reports whether it answered.

The duty file in your home directory lists five machines with their addresses. All the addresses are in documentation ranges reserved for examples, and only one machine responds. Find which one it is: read your own address, look at the list, and ping the candidates. Each machine has a desk file in the desks directory named after it, and the desk of the one that answers holds the password for the next level.

Here, a machine that is not on the air does not even resolve: ping reports that the name or service is not known. This is a simulated shell over invented files: it understands a teaching subset of commands, and help lists them. When you have the password for level 17, run login 17 <password> or paste it into the answer box.
