Falaj 2: Dotfiles

  • First blood: still open

Files whose names begin with a dot are hidden from an ordinary directory listing. That is a convenience, not a secret: programs keep their settings in hidden files, and so do people who would like a note left alone. Anyone who asks the shell to show everything can see them.

Your home directory looks tidy at first glance, with a couple of ordinary files that tell you nothing useful. The password you need is in a hidden file that a plain ls does not show. Find a way to list hidden files as well, then read the right one.

While you are there, look at the long listing form too. It shows sizes, owners and dates, which you will need in later levels. This is a simulated shell over invented files: it understands a teaching subset of commands, and help lists them. When you have the password for level 3, run login 3 <password> or paste it into the answer box.
