Falaj 8: Loud Lines

  • First blood: still open

Real logs are mostly boring, and the interesting entry hides among thousands of ordinary ones. A useful trick is to filter out what you already understand rather than search for what you hope to find.

The channel log in your home directory is full of lines marked as routine. One line is different and carries the password for the next level. Use grep with its inverting option to show only the lines that do not contain the routine marker, and use its counting option to find out how many lines match a pattern before you print them. If the count of non-routine lines surprises you, you have learned something about the file.

Filter first and read second. It is faster and it is how analysts triage logs. This is a simulated shell over invented files: it understands a teaching subset of commands, and help lists them. When you have the password for level 9, run login 9 <password> or paste it into the answer box.
