Penetration testing in the UK
Delivered remotely from Muscat in UK working hours, with on-site days in the UK, against FCA and PRA operational resilience rules, NCSC guidance, UK GDPR, PCI DSS and ISO/IEC 27001.
Regulations and schemes we align to
FCA and PRA operational resilience
UK banks, insurers, payment and e-money firms must identify their important business services, set impact tolerances and show they can stay within them through severe but plausible disruption. Penetration testing is one input to that evidence. Our reports tie each finding to the business service it affects, so your resilience team can see which weaknesses threaten an impact tolerance and which do not.
Threat-led testing: CBEST and STAR-FS
The Bank of England's CBEST and the STAR-FS framework run threat-led tests under their own rules, with regulator involvement and providers that meet the scheme requirements. Vulnera is not an approved CBEST provider. What we do is help firms prepare: a scoped test of the systems behind important business services, or an intelligence-led red team exercise run outside the schemes, so the formal test finds fewer basic issues.
NCSC guidance and Cyber Essentials Plus
We follow NCSC guidance on penetration testing scoping and reporting, and map findings to the Cyber Assessment Framework for organisations that use it. Cyber Essentials Plus is certified by IASME-licensed certification bodies, which we are not; many clients use a Vulnera test beforehand to find and fix issues before the assessor arrives. Public-sector systems that require a CHECK provider are outside what we offer, and we will say so at scoping.
UK GDPR and the ICO
Findings that expose personal data are flagged with the UK GDPR implication, so your DPO can judge whether exploitation would amount to a personal data breach reportable to the ICO. Where personal data may be encountered we sign a data-processing agreement, and because testers work from Oman we put an International Data Transfer Agreement in place or keep evidence on UK-hosted infrastructure, as you prefer.
PCI DSS, ISO/IEC 27001 and DORA
Card processors get PCI DSS requirement 11 checks and segmentation validation; ISO/IEC 27001 control references appear on every finding. UK groups with EU-regulated entities can have the same report mapped to DORA for the EU side.
What is usually in scope
UK scopes are usually product-led: a SaaS platform and its APIs, mobile applications, the cloud estate on AWS, Azure or GCP, the identity provider, and the corporate perimeter. Financial firms add open banking and partner APIs and the systems behind their important business services. Internal assessments cover Active Directory or the Entra ID equivalent, segmentation, and the remote access paths used by contractors and managed service providers. Teams shipping LLM features add AI security testing.
Delivery model: remote-first, on-site when needed
Web, mobile, API, cloud and external testing runs remotely from Muscat. For internal network and wireless testing we ship a hardened drop-box, which usually reaches the UK within a week, or send testers for on-site days at your London or regional office. Daily syncs run in your morning, confirmed criticals are reported the same day, and the report is walked through with engineers and with the risk owner.
Time-zone coverage
Muscat is on Gulf Standard Time, UTC+4, with no daylight saving. That puts us four hours ahead of the UK in winter (GMT) and three hours ahead during British Summer Time (BST). Our testers shift their day to cover UK business hours for scheduled sessions, and overnight UK change windows fall in our morning, which suits out-of-hours testing of production systems.
Recent engagements
UK fintech, payment API
Authorisation and rate-limiting findings across a partner API, including one that allowed a partner to initiate payments against another partner's customers. Fixed and retested within the release cycle.
UK SaaS company, pre-certification test
External and cloud configuration review ahead of a Cyber Essentials Plus assessment. Exposed admin interfaces and missing MFA on legacy accounts fixed before the assessor's visit.
Professional services firm, internal network via drop-box
Active Directory attack path from a standard user to domain admin through misconfigured certificate templates. Remediation plan delivered with the infrastructure team.
All engagements are anonymised and described with client approval.
Why Vulnera here
UK clients choose Vulnera for senior testers at competitive rates, findings with evidence rather than scanner output, and a free retest that closes the compliance loop. We are clear about what we are and are not accredited for, our own security practices are documented on our security page, and the full service description is on the penetration testing page.
FAQ
Are you CREST or CHECK accredited?
No. Our testers hold OSCP, OSEP, OSWE, CRTO and CISSP, and we follow NCSC guidance and OWASP and PTES methodology. If your policy requires a CREST or CHECK provider for a specific system, tell us at scoping.
Can evidence stay in the UK?
Yes. On request, evidence is stored on UK-hosted infrastructure and deleted 90 days after the report unless you ask otherwise.
Can you help us prepare for Cyber Essentials Plus?
Yes. We test the same areas the assessment covers and retest after you fix, so fewer issues surface during the assessment. The certificate itself comes from a licensed certification body.
How do we pay?
Bank transfer in GBP, USD or OMR, with milestone invoicing for longer engagements.
